"Futbol", or soccer, is the most favorite pastime and sport of the citizens of Mexico.  The game is played by two teams of eleven players with a round ball that may not be touched with the hands or arms during play except by the goalkeepers. The object of the game is to score goals by kicking or heading the ball into the opponents' goal.

You will use the engineering design process to create a skilled "goal keeper" out of lego robotics.  You will use your math skills to determine the area of the goalie and the soccer goal.

Task 2

SWBAT: compare and contrast the Western number system to the Mayan and Roman number systems; create your own number system with rules
Picture^ Read about Maya! ^
Amazingly, the Mayan civilization was a great, yet mysterious one.  As mentioned in the video, they were one of the first civilizations to recognize zero as a number, and created their own writing system.
  1. Read more about the Mayans - What surprised you? What connections did you make?
  2. Discover the Mayan counting system-->  compute math problems using their symbols

Roman Numerals
3.  Learn about some other number systems such as Roman numerals and the Inca counting system.
4.  Compare and contrast the number systems.
5. Create your own number system and three problems for someone else to solve. Include at least 3 rules and be sure that you are able to count from 0 to 100, compare the sizes of numbers, and add/subtract numbers before you have someone else try your number system.
